Subject: spinnerbaits

First I apoligize if these are stupid questions, but when I'm looking at different spinnerbaits and they are listed as 1 oz , 2 oz or 3 oz etc. is it reffering to the total weight of the bait? Or is it reffering to the lead portion on the bait? Lastly whats your favorite spinnerbait weight for casting around weeds?
Thanks- Pete

It probably refers to the weight of the head. I like a 1 ounce around weeds. If there is too much weight it will sink too fast and get caught in the weeds. I like the larger ones for deep water slow rolling!

I prefer the heavier ones in the weeds...you can rip them out of weeds better and have more control the steer them through..3-4 or even 5 onces I throw...Ben

3oz Pearson Grinder get's throught the weeds great.
The tandem CJs which are maybe 2oz are little harder to get through.

But then again the design is different too. The arms are different length and the blades protect the hook better on the Grinder.

Then you have Fudally Candy Spin which is lighter, maybe 1 oz get's through the weeds great.

Then again it also depends what kind weeds and how nasty they are. Million options! Least in my experience.

It is interesting to note that some people rate the weight of their spinnerbaits by the head, and some manufacturers do so by entire weight. Depends on make. I too, like the heavier ones for going through the weeds(my buddies GP Thumpers really kick butt for this). Seems the heavier heads keel the lure better, keeping them upright as they travel through weed stalks, not allowing them to 'tip over' where weed collection occurs. I do like the lightweight slopmaster type and the lighter one Keith Worral makes with Colorado blades for going up over the sloppy stuff though.
