| If you are having a normal spring, how do you attack your lake?
When is your opener? |

|
| My normal opening day tactics is twitching 5" slammers. Working tight inside the docks on rocks on old submergent vegitation. I also use Undertakers, Reef Hawgs and Husky Jerks. I work the jerkbaits in a fashion that is slow and I try to get them to pop the surface a few times during the retreive.
The southern Wisconsin opener is May 4th |

| I look for the warmest water possible, usually back bays and start working 6"Jakes and Baby Shallow Raiders and Husky Jerks. Some of this baits I've altered so they are neutrally boyant, leaving them in the strike zone longer.
I also like to throw walk the dog style topwater, you can leave them sit between walks and this is what sets them off(have let them sit as long as 10 secs and have fish hit them)

| My opener is late May/early June (don't know the exact date right now) and my tactic is to go to darker water, like flowages and the Wisconsin River.
I'll fish shallower water, looking for emerging weeds and stumpfields. I'll use smaller baits like 1/2 - 3/4 oz. Secret Weapon spinnerbaits, small Jakes and Crane baits.

| Opener for me is when ice is out on the Fox Chain. Since the season is open year round in Illinois, you can go pretty much any time. The water is the clearest it will be all year at ice out. I pretty much stick with basin trolling at ice out with things still so cold. Concentrating on current areas adjacent to deep water with a feeder flat nearby. Use a multitude of bait types in your spread. Once you get some action, begin changing your baits up accordingly to get more of the same thing in the water.
As things progress and the water warms up, I will begin fishing the shallow bays, channels, beach fronts and rocky flats. My favorite baits at this time are a Clack-tail, Mann's 1-minus, smaller Ghostails/Buchertails/Shumway tails, Spring Dawgs, Spinner Baits and Squirkos. I just started using Bulldawgs this past Fall. I can't wait to get them going in the spring. I run and gun at this time of the year. Searching as much water as I can looking for active fish, warm water, early weed growth and baitfish. |
