I was hoping a couple of you could help me out. I have about 15 top raiders that have all been hammered over the years. About 75% of them either run crooked or roll over when the are retrieved. I have messed around with Buchers lure tuner device but that does not seem to help at all. Is there something that i am missing here??? Have you guys had this problem and if so, how do you get them to run straight again???? Thanks guys.

The weight has broken loose inside. I broke 6 of them last year at the Sab Bay outing alone. They can be fixed. Not sure who, but it may have been Mr. Sluggo, told me how. Drill a 1/8 hole in the top. Shake the bait, top up, to settle the weight. Drop in some superglue to secure the weight. Allow to cure. The take some Great Stuff, or other expanding foam insulation, and spray some inside. You'll have to experiment a little on how much to spray in. When it expands, it will fill the whole bait, and come out the hole. Allow to setup, and shave off excess. Put a thin coat of epoxy to seal if desired, and you're good to go. One benefit is that the bait will run a little bit lower in the water, and create a little more wake.

Thanks Shep, I would never have thought of that.

I really appreciate it.

Awe, shucks. I didn't think of it either. So the thanks should really go out to Mr. Sluggo. Pretty sure he was the one. Or maybe Theedz told me that Sluggo told hime. Or maybe DaveJ told me that Theedz told him, that Sluggo told him, that.... Ah well, Just trying to help out. As long as the fix is in, that what really matters.

I've fixed a few Top Raiders, but I do it a little differently. I drill a larger hole, about 5/8 to 3/4 in diameter right in the top. I use a Forstner bit but a sharp spade bit would do the job. GO SLOW! Once you have opened up the patient you'll see the weight and a little plastic pin. The weight on the old Top Raiders was tapered and offset in the body to counteract the rotation, and it slipped under the pin. I mix up some five minute epoxy, smear it on the weight and inside the body and force the weight into position. Practice this without epoxy first. To fix the hole in the top I cut a piece of plastic the approcimate size of the hole, smear epoxy on it and force it in place. Clear plastic from a Rapala container works great. Take a fine file to it and clean it up, add more epoxy and sand, a little paint, BLACK of course, and you are good to go. LOTW approved. A Top raider with a flat top! I use Devcon epoxy, but there are lots of other epoxies that will do the job. Mix it well! Good Luck!
