All, I just picked up a new reel that I am giong to spool with 80lbs power pro. I think I remember seeing some suggestions on the best way to get a good fill but I can't remember the suggestions. I know to put mono backing (about 25% of the spool???) on with the same diameter as my power pro. I seem to remember someone saying you have to dip the line or reel in cold water or something to that effect. I'd appreciate it if anyone can offer me the correct suggestion to get the right amont of line with the right tension....

I use small diameter line. 4-8lb for backing. If you are only casting then only put on about 75-80 yeards of line. It's more than enough. I tie the two lines together with a blood knot, then take my reel out back and take off all the superline after I tie off to a tree or the back door. Then I winch myself back in. I want my arms to burn, that's how hard i want the line packed on. This helps eliminate dig in backlashes. Hope this helps.

If you want to fill your spool but not use way more power-pro than you need, here is what I do..
I measure out in the yard how much power por I want to use on the reel then reel it up on the reel. Now tie your blood knot to the mono you will be using for backing and reel on enough mono until your reel is as full as you want it to be. Now you have to reverse the line on the reel. Take an empty 2 liter pop bottle and stick a bolt thru the cap and a nut to hold it. Chuck it up in your cordless drill and wind the mono followed by the power pro onto the pop bottle. Now use another pop bottle to re-wind the line so the power por is now on the bottom and the mono is on top. When you wind it on your new reel now the spool will be exactly as full as you want with no wasted power pro. Do wind the power pro on tight. I have one of my boys run across the yard with it until I reach my mono backing and fight them all the way in.

Lobi is right on with how he spools his reels.
After a season of use, I do the same thing and then reverse the Cortland Spectron that I put on my rels.
That line on the bottom of the reel never gets used, so I stretch it out, and tie on the front end and wind it back up!
Does that make me a tigh-wad?
