Just got home from a local lake that appears to have suffered a pretty good freeze out from this past winter. Lots of dead panfish,an ick smell, really dingy water, I hope the muskie population is still out there swimming!! Anyone else have issues from this winter?? The lake is in northern Oneida county and is a really good candidate for an aeration system.

The indiana lakes seem to have some freezout every year. There appears to be isolated parts that have fish kills but not the main lake parts. Panfish, shad and a few bass can be seem floating around as the wind directs them to the windy banks.

DR., I read in the Sunday paper yesterday that Irving and Sweeney both suffered some winterkill. I have a hunch I know which one you were on. Irving and Ballard froze out completely about 6 years ago. They restocked the bejesus out of them since then. It would really suck if it happened again.

Irving and Ballard had the "recent" severe winterkill everyone keeps mentioning in the winter of '95 - '96. 8 full seasons ago as of ice off this spring. In the spring of '96 through the summer of '97 Ballard was stocked with 164,800 musky fry and 500 extended growth fingerlings (about 10"length). In that same '96 - '97 timeframe 1,100,000 walleye fry were stocked along with 26,400 walleye fingerlings. Irving during those same initial 2 seasons also had 164,800 musky fry stocked. No walleyes were stocked in Irving following the winterkill. All those muskies with 7 - 8 years growth will be in the 40"+ range now. Since that initial "heavy" dose of stocking those first two seasons following the winterkill, both lakes got the "normal" amount of muskies and walleyes according to the acre size of the lakes just as any other lake from '98 through '00 (in those lakes that's 800 - 1000 extended growth musky fingerlings and 50,000 walleye fry in alternating years). Since 2000 neither lake has been stocked with anything.

Indiana gets affected by quick thaw/freeze circumstances which can trap some fish shallow. This year the Barbee Chain was worse then any previous year that I noticed(been on the channel 10 years now) with LOTS of redear and some shad being noticeable. Average size of redear were about 7-9"s with a few close to 12"(saw a couple giants by my dock floating), average size of the shad was about 12". Did not see anything else floating(or submerged). I am guessing that the warm weather we had in January brought some fish too shallow and a quick freeze trapped them.
