Hiya!!

Contemplating putting on full rear eva foam grips on my split grip rods...especially my jerkbait rod. All of them are Legend tournament (Big nasty, Long Ranger, and The Jerk). My rods are stored roughly 200 miles away so was wondering if someone could quickly send me a cork diameter of the rear cork behind the reel seat. Wanting to purchase the grips so when the rods come home, I can do them quickly. Gut instinct says it will not take long (cut off old grips, glue removal, install and shape transition to cork (like the rods today st. croix is making with eva foam)

Also, is there a preferred way to shape the eva foam to size? I've done cork many times, so no issue with that and sandpaper, but am unsure of how to do it with eva foam.

suggestions are definitely welcome! Thanks in advance!!

Steve, I'm going to send you a PM. I make muskie rods and have done a few with EVA grips to try, yet most are still full cork. I do like the grips for feel and function. I'll send you specific info and photos if you send your contact information.

The most common size for EVA rear grips is 1.25" dia, but there is also 1.5" if you want bigger. You shape EVA with sandpaper, the same as you would cork. I shape both EVA & cork grips on a lathe, but it can be done with a handheld drill, or drill press. The last 2 are a little harder to work with, but if you are careful, and take your time, can work. After sanding EVA, it looses its color slightly from the dust, and just brushing off the pc doesn't clean it well. When finished, wash the EVA lightly with Dawn dish soap, and water on a sponge. The EVA color will be brighter. I've been building Redfeather Custom Fishing Rods for quite a while, and use EVA a lot for grips on new & rebuilds. You can do a lot with all of the color and pattern options available now. PM me if you have any questions about the process.

I've got a set up that uses a drill and a rheostat to control speed, in conjunction with my rod building stands so good to go there. What grit do you use for the foam?

Thanks!

Don’t know if these measurements will help you since my Big Nasty is a full cork grip. Directly behind the real seat it measures 1.275” (32.38mm) but then 1” behind the reel seat it measures 1.395” (35.44mm) and continues to the butt.
