Posts: 90 | Nostalgia. This is much of what draws me to the Northwoods. There are quite a few places left where times of the past have been maintained in much of the original form. This requires dedication. I haven't been everywhere, but I have been to quite a few places. Without giving a complete list I will just give the one place where I would have to say, if even by a slim margin, has maintained that originality and connection to it's origins the best. That place for me is Burntside Lodge in Ely, MN. Where would this be for you?

Posts: 1750 | Kettle Falls Hotel in Voyageurs National Park is very historic. Very sporadic Muskie fishing but the over-all remoteness is nice. It's boat-in only no roads or airplanes.

Posts: 1292 | Neat article in the Trib not too long ago about Camp Van Vac on Burntside lake. Been in the same family for over 100 years. Many guests have been coming every year for decades. Like 40 or 50 years.

Posts: 1421 Location: Brighton CO. | Going up to the Northwoods the last 50 years I've fished lots of lakes. My grandparents had a house on a Lake later my Grandma lived in Eagle River right above Vera's Hairdressing shop on Wall street. Did a lot of Lake jumping I do remembering in the 70's when Ed Gabes on Lost lake closed down, in 2007 seven we fished there and went in to the old lodge to take a rest and have a Beer and all the cabins were Condos. It was sad day. In the 80's we were heading across the area on Hwy H and stopped in a place off the side of the road "The Kathan Inn" on Kathan Lake we never fished this Lake but have driven by lots of times so we stopped in for Beer. After that being close to Eagle River we would meet friends drink Beer and shoot pool there at night. It was a nice quaint little resort on Kathan Lake (kinda of a frog pond) Up to a few years ago they had a nice web sight listing all the history and the owners over the years. Yes now more condos. We stayed at Red Wing lodge on Lake Of The Woods, Paradise Lodge and Paradise Lodge II and Paradise Point in Minaki, rented lots of houses around Deer River area on Minnesota. One year we stayed at a place on Leech Lake at a resort on Allen's Point the cabin was on a little bluff above the lake it was very close to the lake when you looked out the window and looked down you could see water almost like you were in the Lake. On top on that it was haunted. My sister woke up one morning and there was a ghost of a guy buttoning up his flannel shirt in front of the mirror. we told her she was nuts, then a fishing buddy of the family staying with us said well now that mention that I was up and coming back from the bathroom and I saw something too. Last time I looked a Google maps the resort is there but the cabin was gone they I think they took it down or it fell in the lake. As of late I fish around Hayward WI. we stayed at Deerfoot Lodge and this year we are staying in a rental home. I still have a old phone book of my Grandma's from the early 90's it's fun to look at all the resorts and businesses that are long gone.
