Hopefully the impact is minimal.

I wonder how some walleye lakes above where they pull spawn from will do...might they see an increase in population of a year class?

The lakes I am familiar with used to be pretty decent for walleyes until they started the nets to gather eggs and milt. For years (easily 20 years from the late 70's to nearly 2000 ) the lakes did not receive any of the fry or fingerlings and the walleye population went down significantly. In the past 20 years or so they have been stocking one of the lakes and it helped out with a great year in the mid 2000's, but people heard of the good bite..and guess where they all went? A public access went in in the late late 90's which I believe was the requirement for stocking at that time, which is the reason they started stocking walleyes.

Interesting. Just a story this morning in Milwaukee Sentinel Journal. While nothing is set in stone, sounds like WI DNR is proceeding at least with taking walleye eggs. Muskies seemed to still be up in the air, but it hasn't been ruled out if I understood correctly. They are trying to do what they can safely.
Had an amazing photo with the story, a walleye caught in a fyke net that was going to be used for eggs. The fish came from a small lake in Jackson County, 17.5 pounds, 32.5 inches long.

There is a chance the MNDNR could still purchase fish from a private sector for stocking this fall. There are two issues with this however, DNR provides private sector eggs from spring egg take in most cases, and AIS might limit purchasing fingerlings from other states if they are available.

A novel idea, and one that we are working with the private WI hatcheries/WDNR on now, so that these hatcheries can continue their Muskellunge propogation in concert with DNR strain guidelines. Brett, I'd like to give you a call sometime to discuss how MN went about this.
