Posts: 352 Location: Vilas County, WI | What triggers the transition to the big bucktails during the summer bite? For example, in June you often hear guys doing well on smaller, single blade bucktails. Then come summer its double 10's. (I'm speaking of northern WI trends). Anyhow, is it water temps, air temps, forage, structure, that signals the time to put the Mepps single blades away and break out the DCG? I know you can throw single blades year round, or DCG year round; just looking for some input from those who can share what might trigger this transition. Thanks! Show

Posts: 670 Location: Otsego, MN | As summer warms the water the fishes metabolic rate increases, maybe they want bigger meals? Not sure about Northern WI but I'll throw big blades year round from June til freeze in MN. I'll also throw small burners in the heat of the summer. It depends on how your fishing too. If they want speed throw a smaller burner, night fishing slow down and up the size with a super model. Not sure if there's a real transition point it kind of depends on the mood of the fish and conditions your fishing I think.

Posts: 921 | Interesting topic. I typically throw a Junior Double Cowgirl all year long with a Super Model mixed in later in the summer. I've taken my new girlfriend musky fishing 4 times so far this summer. Mostly in June here in MN. From the front of the boat I threw my Junior DCG and also for the heck of it threw the Supermodel some. I had her throwing a little Candy Spin in the back of the boat as she is new to fishing and I was hoping with the smaller bait she would contact some pike or bass. Needless to say, she had 4 follows this year compared to my zero when I was fishing with her. No eaters, just chasers. One fish maybe a fluke, but 4 fish I don't think is a fluke ... It really made me think about "downsizing" early in the year. Ball Cap

Posts: 352 Location: Vilas County, WI | Thanks for the feedback. I'm not totally sold on the small baits in June theory but this year I was blanked in June while my fishing partner boated 3 - all on small single Mepps bucktails. Now this same fishing partner will only DCG and larger in August. Our discussions is what lead to this topic.

Posts: 1000 | i typically throw 9spankys or jr cowgirls all year depending on how deep i need to run. once these fish start really eating though i start throwing 10's more often. Yesterday slow rolling spanky10's we got a 40 and a 46. Those fish saw lots of different offerings, but only ate those big blades. usually its not that clear.
