| Heading up to Oneida/Vilas county late June, and want to fish Crab Lake. Any tips besides watch for rocks and drive slowly would be greatly appreciated. Will the higher water levels help us out, or just give a false send of security out there.

Location: Wisconsin | I would say finding weeds on shallow flats will be key on crab this early. Fishing with cloud cover or at night be more productive with the water being so clear on crab |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Crab at night would be a scary thought unless you were in Howie Meyer's or Adam Johnson's boat. In fact if you stop by Skyview Lodge about cocktail hour either one might be around, just ask the mixologist if either is there, if you don't know them. I'm sure they would be happy to give some pointers on whats happening.

| I have been fishing Crab for 30 years as the family has a cabin on the lake. First off, higher water will give you a false sense of security. Any rocks that are dangerous at normal levels will still be dangerous. With the normal spring this year fish will be transitioning to islands and rock bars near those islands. I would concentrate my efforts there and not spend much time in the very limited weeds that do exist. If you just cant move anything off the islands and nearby rocks I would take a look at the downed timber that is almost everywhere. As far as lures go I would pull out the glide and jerk baits first then go to crankbaits if need be. It really isn't much of a blades bite on Crab unless you are fishing under the cover of complete darkness. Good Luck. |
