You don't need be in shape or smart to fish for muskies, so middle aged white men fit the bill...BR

Thats a bit childish BenR, I guess you could just look that up and see if your wrong, about the shape and intelligence.
There has actually been a lot of work the last few years in the twin cites to introduce our youth of all ethnicity to fishing and musky fishing. Go walk the mpls lakes, there might be more diverse fisherman than youd think, Actually a white guy could be outnumbered there. As said most of it is handed down through families and tradition, and a big part of it is, who can or cannot afford a boat. Instead of buying my truck spinners and rims, i purchased a modest boat for myself.
It also could be predominantly middle aged white, because that is the hardest demographic to get a job right now, and they have a lot of free time.

im far younger than middle aged but am completely taken by the sport of musky fishing i was lucky enough to be introduced by dad and grandad at a very young age. I play sports too, but only a select few bring that to the next level as we all know.. Fishing will be with me forever.

Thanks for proving my point...BR

i had an old fishing buddy that once i became an almost exclusive musky angler he developed an attitude toward musky anglers saying it was a rich mans sport, all musky anglers think they are better than other multi-species anglers. how far from the truth! its like anything one is passionate about, you go after it with all your available resources.i didn't start fishin because someone did or didn't.very humble beginnings and i've meet many different people....so good some not so good.its not an exclusive sport.its inclusive. everyone has the choice.

No women in the sport?

Because when the fishing's been slow, it's thirty five degrees out, raining sideways and blowing a gale you can always look over at your buddy and say...

A lot of this comes from geography and economics. However it's also a failure of the current 20-65 year old demographic group that most of us are in to instill in the younger generation the same passion we have. How many of us have bought our kids Xbox games or Ipods which gets them to spend more time on the couch or less engaged with other people. I have and that's not helping. If you want to change that demographic it starts with you.

Off the soapbox now - sorry.

I'd say those numbers can go younger and older. I am 18 about to turn 19 in a couple months and have been fishing muskies since 4th grade, in college now. My girlfriend also recently caught the musky bug, brought her up to AML last year and she got up before anyone else fished off the pier, stuck it out when it rained every day and still managed to catch 3 muskies, her first walleye and pike. Whoever gets educated about muskies and has either access to lake or river, or knows someone with access will fish for them. Myself I like to take all my friends muskie fishing try to get them their first musky. I have about 6 friends who fish for muskies now all 18 or 19 years old. Its all about location, connections and desire. I remember how we started musky fishing. My dad, brother and myself weren't catching a lot of walleye anymore so we decided to get a musky pole as a joke and go catch one. Many casts later, my dad got his first one, introduced my brother and I to the sport, been hooked ever since.

Im currently taking hunters safety and looking forward to finding somewhere to hunt, now 8 years ago I had no desire to get into hunting. But through my friends, like how i taught them and sparked their interest in muskie fishing, they got me wanting to hunt. So connections, where you live and desire are huge factors.

What IS middle-aged anymore, anyway??? Is it still 50? Only if you live to be hundred, I guess. But if most people are croaking somewhere between 65-85, then I guess middle-aged is more like 32-44. (Scary.)

And what about the WHITE part? Tough call there, too. With so many interracial marriages for years now, I'm not so sure that white or black is still out there anymore---more like a tannish color, at best.

It depends on where you are at. I guide both the Minneapolis Metro area and the Duluth area and have to say that there is a difference if what types of people I take out. Obviously the trips I take out in the metro is a much more diverse crowd then the trips in northern MN. It isn't that white middle aged men are the only ones that like musky fishing by any means, it is just how diverse the community is that you are fishing in.

Who cares just go out and fish!More diversity means more crowds on the lake.

Yep! I don't care about diversity. If it happens, fine. If it doesn't, that's fine too. Whatever floats your boat.
