Location: Hayward, WI | Deepest was 76', casting a Triple D around ciscos. Bait probably 8 feet down or so. 2nd deepest I think 72', dragging a sucker 12' down. Catch a pretty high percentage of my fish over 20-25 feet of water, with baits probably running 5-10 feet down. |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | We had a day where we caught two mid-40 inch fish in under 6 ft of water before sun-up and later in the morning three more in 45 ft of water just a hundred yards away. Crazy thing was they all hit topwaters. I have no idea why the fish do what they do. I am just lucky to figure out what they are doing when I'm on the water.
The problem is that those fish just do whatever they want. They should just stay shallow where they are easier to catch, but noooooo.  |

Larry Ramsell did a tracking study on a large Canadian lake back in the mid-80s. He found that muskies routinely used both deep and shallow water areas. The two-part article was published in In-Fisherman as I recall, so you might search for it online if interested. It's a great read--and Larry is a great reference on this sort of stuff.
As for the swim bladder issue, I started a thread about this in the science forum a while back. We talked about the swim bladder and the duct found in muskies, that connects the esophagus to their swim bladder. Here is the link for anyone interested:

| I want trolling a tuff shad with 150' line out and it got smoked by a 42" in February. Bait had to have been @ least 30' down on a steep break into 45' of water. |

| I've had trolling rips in over 80 FOW. Bait down 10-18' depending on the day/ bait used. Gelb's book discusses thermocline fishing in detail. Highly reccomended. |

Location: Perryville, MO | Most of my catches by have been shallow. It's just far easier to control the variables. I hate to troll. So I try to intercept the movement shallow. No doubt Buck is right: "The fish's home is deep water." Outside of jigging, it's a hard game as far as I'm concerned to cast deep water. But Travis' posts the last few years have convinced me that he's got something figured out over the abyss. I've now been rewarded a couple of times. But unlike Travis, I still need some structure at least relatively nearby to have confidence. A couple of fish have been put in my bag now that have come over 30-40ft. Areas that most would definitely consider the main lake basin. |

| Trolling 32' open water / main lake basin , Girlfriend caught a 38" Pike marked alot of baitfish around made another pass I and caught My biggest a 52" X 26" Muskie in Oct on a Grandma running down about 14 ft ...
