It seems the guys who don't like the phantoms prefer gliders that are much easier to work (imo). Once you learn how to work a phantom you will see that you can get them to do much more than just a consistent gliding action like a manta or hellhound. a phantom can be worked to consistently glide, but can also be worked to dance and dart side to side and up and down... Is it a must have? Try one out... Maybe

I have tried phantoms, even complained about the lack of action on here and tried them in a swimming pool using the tips gleaned from that post. Nothing, they just seem to pull straight forward then sink. Short pulls, long pulls, fast, slow. All the same lifeless retrieve... I must not get it.

Don't "pull" as you stated...taps! Soft taps, quick taps, hard taps, violent taps of the rod tip will get your phantoms to dance. Do not pull it! It's not a suick.

I get em to dance on straight wire leaders, 7 strand, and floro, swivels, no swivels, snaps, and split rings...does the action differ? Probably, but I can still get them to shimmy, glide, and wobble with any sort of attachment to the line.

I guess I meant taps when I said pulls. The only action I can get is the curly tail at the end. I guess I'm just done with their bs.

remember you need some amount of slack to get them to glide...

I agree, must be the bait's fault.

I'd agree. A lot of people OVERWORK them such as making bulldawg pulls. A phantom is like jerkbait fishing for bass. It's all about throwing slack into the line. I would agree you get a lot more lookers than biters but they definitely help locating fish.

With phantoms it also helps to have a single stand leader with the phantom attached with a split ring.
