Very good point Joel, I couldn't agree more. I do ask myself the "what" question, and that is the main reason I also catch my fish. But "why" stop there? "Why" not go a little farther when you are at work during the week and ask yourself the "why" question? I usually don't ask myself the "why" question during the weekend until I am off the water. At the end of the day I feel it is important to reflect back on the things that worked and didn't work, and try to speculate "why". This often makes things easier for the next day, or sometimes weekend.

I'm in the same boat as CiscoKid (sometimes literally). I really like what DickP says, "Doing what you always did, will get you what you've always got". If you are satisfied with your current results... then stick with WHAT has been working and be content. And when you are on a HOT pattern... this is WHAT you should do. Its when nothing is working or pre-planning when the WHY part is most useful.

My "problem" with limiting yourself to the "what" strategy is it doesn't work well with my now LIMITED time on the water. I can no longer "pick a system apart" for days on end hoping to "stumble into" WHAT is working. When you only have short windows to fish (most of my trips are 2 hours at a time), you have to be strategic in your approach. In other words, use your time wisely. Asking yourself WHY your past successes MAY have occurred, will help you narrow down your options to choose from the next time you hit the lake AND give you confidence in your decision. CiscoKid is right when he says keep things simple ON the water.... and ask/speculate why OFF the water.

Here is another thought (the semantics of this topic). Just what is the difference between WHAT and WHY? If you know fish relate to wind... is that a what or why?. Why the wind turns fish on is one question... but WHY a certain spot turns on can be answered with your WHAT. Why is this spot good today and showed us nothing yesterday? Because the wind is blowing into it. See what I mean? Is that a what or a why? I think WHAT is in the past and WHY is in the future. Your WHAT happened yesterday explains WHY you should do it again today.

Joel, I think a lot of your WHAT's are no different than my WHY's. The only difference is when your WHAT's are not producing... I feel my WHY's will help me find a productive pattern faster because it makes me more versatile by offering something new to try that is not on your "what" list (even though you say you've done it all, so there is nothing new to try). Even if that is the case, it will take you a LONG time to run through your list and find something that is working.... without asking why will one option be better than another.

Admittedly, I always start with WHAT has worked in the past under similar conditions (and why not?). But, when that strategy does not produce, your adjustment needs to consider WHY. Otherwise you are simply waiting for your the fish to start using YOUR pattern again.... rather than finding the new pattern. Again, I don't have time wait for the fish to come to me.

Bottom line, when you ask yourself WHAT are the fish doing and want to eat today you have two choices. Randomly try to repeat past successes through trial and error OR incorporate your past experiences into a well rounded strategy of INTELLIGENT MUSKY FISHING. Whether you ask what or why is indifferent, as long as you are thinking and not just going through the motions.

And WHY are we so hung up on just what and why? We shouldn't forget to ask "where" and "when" too (ha ha).

Mr. Anonymous... I like what you have to say. Why stay anonymous with those words of wisdom? At any rate, you create a clear picture that is easy to understand and simplify some pretty overcomplicated subjects. Thanks for keeping things in perspective.

"Why" as related to fish activity?
A single word - "INSTINCT"

Daggone dude!!! Don't let some flack on the board keep you from becoming a member! A good "whizzing contest" helps others vent; for the most part grudges are not held + you will be welcomed w/ open boats, group hugs, Pay Days, Coke Colas + a new home away from home...so forget about the past few days + take the plunge![;)] [:sun:]

Anon,
Don't take this as any bashing going on between everyone. Any harsh words are done in fun, and if they are not they shouldn't be said. That is one of the great things about this site. No bashing goes on here, just a lot of fun. As JLong said, you have very good things to say and we like to hear them. So as Mr. Squarepants puts it "Take the plung".

I think Steve Worrall is smarter than the muskies. Why do you guys wanna attack him for it? His brain has to be bigger than a fishy's. He even knows big words like "Transom". And every time that I've held a lure in front of him he never eats it. HEY neither do the muskies I put it in front of.....Perhaps Worrall is part Esox? Now I'm really confused....

Great debate. Anon I think you should stay around no matter what.

Anon, I actually have enjoyed discussing the subject with you and everyone else who posted, even the Thick One, who insinuates I have Esox in my lineage....NOT!![:0] [;)]

Second Mr. Sponge's comments. Whizzing contests and venting IS truly a part of the group of musky chasers on this site. It'd be a truly sad day when we all agreed on everything. Almost as sad as the day the favoite musky bait becomes watter-logged and is no longer effective. We harbor no ill-feelings towards anyone (well, not long lasting anyway...[;)] )
Mr. Anon (aka Okinawa Kid) you have shared interesting insights and sound logic to topics posted on this board, your one of the guys whether you wish to be or not. Might as well admit it...[:0] [:praise:]

What, why, were, etc.... Agreed same thing. Ridiculous to argue that.

I love the over anylization of this topic. It should be crystal clear that everything we know about fishing is because someone asked themselves "WHY? (consciously or unconsciously)" "WHY" is the FRICKEN KEY. It is a mystery wrapped inside an enigma. "WHY" is infinate. The will to consciously ask "WHY" is what sets the true muskie geniouses apart from the rest, IMHO. I think the MUSKY LEGENDS that have a simplistic view of muskie fishing take for granted the pricelss unconscious knowledge that they have stowed deep down in there brian. To master the MUSKY HUNTING CRAFT you need .....never mind I have lost myself again..D'OH

"WHY" isnt for the weak hearted/brained. It is too easy to give up on "WHY". Relax and remember there isnt an answer to "WHY". Understand that and YOU will have your answer. Ouch...that hurt my brain.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
