What does drag power actually represent? The Toro line has an incredible amount of drag power (22 lbs), while a lot over other reels are in the teens (17 lbs). This might be a stupid question, but what exactly is drag power?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's as simple as the Toro would take 22 lbs. of pressure to pull line at max (lock down) drag. ?

Its the maximum # of pounds it takes for the drag to "disengage", if you set the drag to max on the toro it will take 22 lbs of force before line comes off the spool- these numbers are what the manufacture claims to be the maximum the drag will provide. - However if you really "lock down" a drag sometimes it can stick or line will dig not allowing the drag to function properly. IMO a good rule of thumb is to not have your drag lbs set past 1/3 of breaking strength of line you are using - example I would NOT set a toro at 20lb drag with 50lb line.

Not a dumb question at all. IMO and yet personal preference, I like the drag locked down. I rely on free spooling when it comes down to it. I think the more drag you have set, the better you can set the hook. I believe the more the better, but yet you have to question the integrity of the reel.
