Location: Not far enough north! | If I remember right the ones he really liked were made by a company that went out of business many many years ago. He couldn't find any that were as good as those so he started using his chin wiskers to sharpen them.
He said he found a 4" mill file from grainger...
I just by a cheap flat file from the hardware store and when it rusts up I get a new one... Gets the hooks plenty sharp, I think technique is more important than the actual file. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I bought the "other" file he talked about. I believe it was a Nicholson file. When I worked at Fastenal I crossed th Grainger part number and it did cross to a Fastenal part#. If you have a local Fastenal, bring in the Grainger part number and they should be able to cross the part and get it for you. I've used it and it works well. I'm not sure if it is much BETTER than the yellow Luhr Jenson file, but it does seem to get the few hooks I have done pretty sharp.
If you buy the Grainger/Fastenal file, you'll probably want to buy or make a handle for it.
