| Hey all,
I'm looking to make a couple really deep diving baits, 30 feet plus, for muskie of course. I have a couple lip designs and baits drawn up on AutoCAD, but I have a couple questions about lips. Which is a better material to use for deep diving lips, stainless steel or lexan? Also, what width for both materials? I'm good with the line tie position and weighting, although i'm not sure if i should weight the bait more towards the head to get it to dive a little deeper. Also, what wood should i use to build this bait? I have a stack of poplar in the garage so I was thinking that might work, or is Oak better? These baits will mostly be trolled over flat bottom open water areas so structure contact isn't a problem. I currently have some .093" lexan I use for smaller lips but I believe that would flex too much if we're talking about a 3" lip.
Thanks,
Zach |

Location: Ohio | 3/16 or 1/4 lexan or 1/8 alum. will be your best bets and this has a lot to do with bait size and weight, weight forward will make a deep diving crank back out if you hook the lip on something |

| bass champ. we have found poplar or oak to be not the better of woods.
poplar will swell and crack.
oak has tendencys to shed paints. just my humble thoughts |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I would suggest if you do metal lips to add in a piece of softer wood for the lip to butt up against and take shock from lip impacts. Keeps the body from damage. I also would say Cedar for the body. Hope it helps! |
