Posts: 1188 Location: Iowa | Let me tell you about a special place in central ontario; a place where you jump on a float plane for a 15 minute flight; a place where you feel as though you are right at home; a place where there is hardly any pressure on the muskies; a place where muskies act as the true predators they are acting on their own instincts; a place where clear trout feed waters lend themselves to some of the fattest and largest muskies one may ever encounter; a place that to my father and I was near muskie nirvana. Where is this place you ask. Nielsen's Fly-In Lodge, run by Don and Lynn Pursch. My father and I purchased "The Greatest Muskie Film Ever Made" some 15 years ago and saw Don Pursch and Larry Dahlberg as well as Jim Linder fishing on Rowan Lake and ever since that first viewing it has been a dream to go and experience what Rowan Lake has to offer. Well that dream was finally realized the week of August 14-21, 2010. We showed up to the lodge owners and staff greeting you on the dock off the float plane followed by a short getting to know the lake session with Don, we were out on the water. As the week progressed fishing seemed ill affected by the frontal movements as we were able to coax over 60 muskies from the ambush spots out to look at our lures. 3-4 of those fish where over 50" with 1 gorilla showing itself 3 times on the last morning (so long it could not turn in the figure 0). Of those fish we hooked 13 and were able to slide the net under 7. We ended the week with 7 fish in the boat. A 34, 39, 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48.5. Every fish was extremely healthy ranging in girth from 17.5 to 19.5. The 48.5 carried the 17.5 girth with the head of a 40 lber. I would highly recommend the Nielsen's Fly-in Lodge experience to anyone even considering heading up there. Definetly get a guide to show you around early in the trip and go from there. I would also like to thank Don, Lynn, Paul and the staff for the unbelievable experience. You really run a top notch camp. I look forward to coming back.
