| Okay, I just got back from a day of fishing in Northern Wisconsin once again and got out for 2 hours before it started thunderstorming. During that 2 hours I had 6 fish follow and no takers. I was so disappointed after. I was using a Mepps Giant Killer with a gold blade and black hair.
What I was wondering...other that a figure 8 which wasn't working...how do you trigger a following musky? I know I was doing a good figure 8, my Dad and my Uncle both thought it was good, but for some reason the fish wouldn't cooperate.
Any help is appreciated, |

| What I do if I am faced with a similar situation is slightly modify the lure that is getting all the follows. Adding a small mr twister on the end of the bucktail is sometimes all you need to turn a follow into a strike. Other times there is nothing in the world that will make the fish bite.
What throw back lures did you try? |

| Brett- Follower's are neutral- you have to get an eat me response from your lure. This is usually a speed change time. As soon as you see the follow, you need to start a speed change up. The fish is obviously already locked into your lure. I'd give the rod tip a short drop- then a quick rip- 1->3 ft should get some response. When I say rip- make it like a side sweep hookset movement. There is no way you can out accelerate a Muskie with your lure. When you feel the fish- set the hook again. Wait until you feel the weight. If you don't get a hit-do the rip again- once she's at the boat it's figure eight time. Some times smooth 8's are ok. If they aren't working try another speed change in the eight, like accelerate the lure out of the corner.
The idea is to trigger the fish's lateral line- fast rip equals prey escape manuever.
Good luck.

| Brett,
Some good tips have already been mentioned....a few other possibilities...
If you see the fish following speed up the retrieve and pump the rod a little to make the hair flare/pump on the tail.
On about the third fish with no strike I would have had someone in the boat try a similar bait but with a few changes...e.g. "I'm seeing fish on a inline spinner with hair", have someone throw a rubber skirted inline spinner like a Shady Tail or Lilly Tail or with maribou like a Boo-tail or funky chicken. Possibly even a small color change.
Other things to consider....was trolling motor propwash scaring the fish? Are you doing your figure 8 long enough deep enough and with wide enough turns?
One other thing that works well...DYNAMITE.. [:0] []
Good luck and don't give up...
