Location: Long Prairie, Minnesota | My bunk trailer for my boat is kind of giving me fits. No matter how I put my boat on the trailer, it will just never center itself. Have never had this problem with a bunk style trailer before. I have tried putting the trailer farther into the water, not as far into the water and cranking the boat up, but the rear end of the boat just won't center itself. Being that my boat is a 1600 Explorer, I can wiggle it around and get it centered on the trailer, but would rather not have to go through that.
Would it be better if I tried moving the bunks towards the out/wheel side of the trailer and having them spread farther apart, or perhaps closer together? Has anyone ever moved their bunks around and what did you get for results? |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | Is the weight in your boat proportionally set out? Meaning, if your the only guy loading the boat, do you have your tackle on the port side(left side) of the boat? This can help a lot even out the weight on both sides. Otherwise, have a second guy sitting in the passenger seat can also help. Also, when your just about ready to engage the trailer with the boat, another little trick you can do is step directly to the middle of the boat, using your right hand to steer the boat up the trailer.
When putting the trailer in the water, are the launches you've been on typically pretty level? Never really heard of people having too many issues with a bunk trailer. Usually you just drive it on and hook it up. |

before moving your bunks location, check the bunk angles.
the bunk itself might have been bumped so it's not angled quite right. i've had this happen before if i came in to the trailer too fast and not quite straight, the boat can push the bunk angle outward slightly when it hits. the boat then doesn't sit quite straight/centered and in the future it will keep loading slightly off.
take a look at them when the boat's in the water and see if the angle of the bunks matches on each side, it should be the same. they're easy to adjust by loosening, moving, and re-tightening the bolts.

| I know of this issue because I have had the same problem.
Solution: Tighten the bolts holding the bunks in place and pull up on the bunks to make the angle as steep as possible and when you load the boat the first time the boat will center and push the bunks down to the proper angle. The bunks are loose and the bunks are flopping around when you try to load the boat. You will probably have to do this once a year and you'll have no more problems. |
