The how to approach topic made me think of this. When I started fishing the twin cities I was initially shocked at the difference in the unwritten rules as compared to northern WI. My first time out ice fishing I set up about thirty yards away from a group on a point for crappies. As the night wore on I would say about 50 more fishermen came out onto the point I was on. What was different was that they drove right up to the group, within 10 to 20 feet and set up there shacks. Now, where I'm from this could cause a small war. What I came to realize after a few times out on these city lakes is that the rules are different here. I'm still not used to people setting up right next to me but I don't get angry about it any more.

Another kind of funny thing I noticed on the heavily traveled lakes is that if you look like you know what your doing, even sort of, other people will fish the spots your on. What's funny is that this often results in a croud of 4-10 boats of people catching nothing. Of course, I never tell the people that the spot I just fished, to try out, dosen't have any fish on it. They can find that out for themselves.

Moral of the story is: try not to get offended if your fishing a new local until you know the rules. []

Back before GPS units were available, I used to 'decoy' the following crowds with yellow Lindy markers in ridiculous places. It always amazed me how a group of boats would converge on the marker, and miss the fact the net was over the side of my boat alot dipping up walleyes we stuck several hundred feet from there. I don't need to do that anymore, as the walleye fishing here is down to recreational at 2 a day off many lakes, and muskies just get an icon punched in on the GPS.

A well know Walleye Pro used to use duck decoys and Sea Gull copies to mark schools of walleyes during Tournaments. When that became common knowledge, some of the teams stopped at nearly every mallard out there to check it.

The 'Old Days'; lots of stories there.....[:praise:]

Used to have peeps follow or observe through field glasses from afar on a rockfish lake near the house here...was ok until I started getting cut off more + more, then I did the same thing Stever did; markers in the wrong places, etc. Main reason for that was some of the boats were keeping everything they caught. I took me Dad + nephew out one morning + w/in 3 hrs we had nailed 17 nice fish + I swore them to secrecy. I also would keep me baits hidden when I came into the dock, but nothing stays secret forever...seems like in todays "me generation" there are few if any rules![:(]

Brian-
You are absolutely right on the WI thing. Out of RESPECT
we usually don't set-up on top of people, but then you have
those folks that see you out there everyday and decide to set-up IN your holes from the previous day by getting on the ice at 3am to "beat you out there" as their sure that's
the only hotspot on the lake. That's when you walk over and buzz 1800 holes and catch fish out of all of them while
those folks sit there trying to figure it all out. I also
don't really get to upset anymore either as these people rarely know what they are doing and after they watch you bang 20 jumbo perch on tip-ups right next to them as they
become more frustrated because their jig-pole tactics are suffering. That's the best. Ice fishing is right up there
with musky fishing man intense as you want it to be.
I LOVE WISCONSIN!!! JT[]
