Posts: 12 | Hi Guys, wondered if i could get your opinions/ reccomendations on colour finder/GPS units, i have been using an old Eagle unit for 12 years and its time for an upgrade. Very few colour units available in the UK at present so i will probably be getting shipped from the US. Questions... Are the colour units worth the extra expense and what are their main benefits? I will need to Make the unit portable as it is necessary to hire boats on many waters here, do the colour units draw a lot more power, need to know i can run for a couple of days off a rechargeable battery unit Are the models with US maps GPS compatible in the UK? obviously these maps of little use to me but seems difficult to source a unit without. Here's the big one, make and model reccomendation please, i have been looking at the Humminbird units which seem to offer pretty good value, would prefer a dual beam transducer and quite interested in the barometric pressure add ons but unsure how this works and what the additional expense will be. Many thanks in advance...Darren.

Posts: 57 | I'm waiting to see some answers to this one too. I'm looking for a mapping GPS like the Lowrance 480, with a sounder included. Tired of looking at the handneld gps and the Garmin and the way the boat is heading. Now what fisherman need is an INEXPENSIVE h.u.d. That is a heads up display for all you non-aircraft buffs.

Posts: 199 Location: Sandusky, OH | I can only offer an answer to part of your question. I find using a color display provides a better level of target separation and allows me to interpret the sonar results with a higher level of accuracy than greyscale units. I can really see changes in substrate types with color, with the harder bottoms returning a much brighter red that softer bottoms. Plus, it is easier to see the details on the gps screens. I know that Lowrance makes some smaller units for ice fishing that are all set up for portability; you might need a different transducer though. Good luck with your search; sorry I couldn't help more. Eric

Posts: 109 Location: Spencer, Wisconsin | I bought last summer the Lowrance 522C combo unit (internal antenna) where it gives the depth, water temp, speed, access for lake map chip, mapping of the bottom of the lake and the GPS function. Very nice unit that was placed on the console and very valuable piece of equipment when I go out on the water. The cost was around $600 and comparing several units I feel this one suited me perfectly it did not break the bank but was a decent unit for the price. Hope this helps
