Posts: 572 | Thinking about getting a Minn Kota Maxxum 70 - 24volts, variable speed, foot control, 70lbs thrust, 42" shaft trolling motor. Any problems / recommendations??? Cabela's advertise .... "This unit is available with Minn Kota's Universal Sonar Transducer built-in and ready to go. " However, when I called them and asked them to check, they said the unit does NOT include the Universal Sonar. Of course, I can not get an email response back from Minn Kota about whether this is suppose to be included or not. Then, Thorn Bros makes one believes it is included on all the Maxxum models. I sent them an email asking if their max 70 included the universal sonar. It seems Minn Kota doesn't clearly identify their models to their dealers....nor to me. Then, I see where others experienced problems with the Universal Sonar. I also noticed a topic where the brushes could have been damaged in shipping. Sounds like if I buy a new trolling motor I should take my old one along to Canada for backup. Should I be looking at a different trolling motor or gamble on the Maxxum 70 without the universal sonar?

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | I have a Maxxum 80 without universal sonar and couldn't be happier. Have had no problems with the brushes, and it's been recommended to me, as you have heard, not to use the universal sonar anyway. Easy to attach your own transducer with a variety of methods. Considering how many Maxxum users are out there, there don't seem to be too many issues. The Maxxum kind of seems like the standard now. I wouldn't consider it a gamble to go with the 70, and I always have a backup with me if I go on long trips because you never know. I think you'll enjoy the Maxxum. Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I think in general the Maxxums are good motors. Some will have problems, but that happens with everything. Are you sure a 42" shaft is long enough? I had a 42 inch shaft on a 16 foot Sea Nymph - not a particilarly big, deep boat, and the shaft was too short. I had to have it most of the way down almost all the time, and the motor would come out of the water in any kind of decent waves. Put a 48 inch shaft on it (guy I bought it from said it was 54....until I measured when it arrived), and it's just long enough in big waves. I had it blow out on me one day but it was pretty nuts out. curleytail

Posts: 572 | I guess I had better check to see if I really have a 42" shaft now. My bass boat sits low in the water and the only time I remember it wasn't long enough was when the waves were breaking over the bow of my boat. The Maxxum 70 comes in a 52" shaft. Perhaps, I'll order that one. Thanks for the advice.
