There are a million things we can learn from tracking muskies. If you had the funds and the time for your own tracking study what would be your #1 "learing goal"??

Mine would be catch & release mortality rate.

Glad you asked...I should have you an answer w/in the next 2 months! I'm heading to the Tattoo shop next week for a 2 day stay where I'll have me entire body "inked" in a life like musky skin from head to toe, enabling me to live under water w/ the musky + do an indepth study of their movements, eating habits + where they hang out during different parts of the yr. My wife will bring food to the river bank + leave it for me daily as I can't swim fast enough to catch my own.....YET. Hopefully I can obtain some scuba gear enabling me to remain under the h20 for long periods of time...if not, then w/ funding/donations I hope to have a plastic surgeon create real gills between me neck + jaw bone in an effort to live entirely under water! I'll let you know how things turn out....[::)] [:sun:]

Musky Illini, I think your study has already been done. I think one thing every one agreed on about the chip study, even with all the problems, was that with all fish caught or netted and recaught some times multiple times, was that the only angler mortality found was that relating to single hook swallow rigs. And this included surgery to implant the transmitter. I think other tracking studies have also show these same results.

Now I would assume this handling was done by above average fishermen with lots of experience. But if I remember correctly some of the chip fish where caught by anglers unconnected to the study. Maybe some one in the know will be brave enough to talk about it. There has to be cases of other transmitter fish being caught by anglers, anyone know anything about any of the other studies done.

What’s scary is that there are many people out there who think mortality rate is 75% or higher and they promote this as fact.

A definitive compellation of existing data to prove these people wrong would be nice.

Well, what I'd like to see is where the H*** are they when I've just fished 30 of the best spots on the LOTWs and haven't had a looker.

Really I've talked to a few biologists and researchers about things like this, and I'd like to see some studies done with fishermen in mind, rather then pure science, or from a fisheries management standpoint, with usually directs the study toward things like finding spawning grounds, some sort of enviromental impact.

From a long term standpoint these studies are very important, but the fishing industry is large. I feel that it's time that at least some research is directed at things that really help fishermen catch fish, or at least help them understand why they didn't catch fish.

With this type of information available, perhaps new fishery management techiniques would have to be developed. We need to be changing our thinking from our old paradigms, and start to do different and better things.
