plastic baits..before you paint are you using MEK or acetone to clean the lures ?

MEK is pretty harsh to the plastic as well as the person using it. Acetone will do the job.

Looking at the Safety side, MEK worse than acetone. MEK has an airborne exposure limit of 200 parts per million (ppm) where acetone has 5 times that at 1,000. They both have simlar side affects but one in a lower concentration. If you do use MEK be sure to use it in a well vented environment. And try to keep it out of you breathing zone...
