Subject: Need Motor Advice Quickly

I am sure this topic has probably been brought up before but I couldn't find thread. I

am in the process of closing a deal for '06 Yamjaha 4-Stroke, 60HP to put on my 2000 Ranger 681T. The boat is 17' in length. The max rating on this boat is 65HP when I know for sure that it can handle 75HP and have even heard some people putting 90HP on this exact boat. I have know idea why the rating on this particular style of boat is so conservative. It is the same style as the older 17' 681 models and they all have this same HP rating.

What are the consequences regarding warraties and insurance of putting a larger motor than recommended? Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

The USCG sets the horsepower rating, so it's not something a consumer can decide. Most states enforce the USCG recommendation as law, so in many areas the DNR can ticket you if you are over USCG recommendation. It's not insurable by most companies, either, and if there is an accident it's a slam dunk liability.

Thanks Steve for the advice. There are ways of getting around the DNR ticketing but I have heard there is no way of getting around the indurance company.

I think I might have to play it safe and go with the 60HP.

Hey Matt, you will also have a hard time getting a dealer to work on your overpowered boat because of there insurance. moat dealer wont even look at it.
