Posts: 561 Location: Monee, Illinois | How many of you have a Transducer that is ticking? How many had one that did not tick and now does? My front one is Ticking and my Marina is going to replace it for me. I have talked to some people and they have said its normal, others say not it should not tick. What is your thoughts? Is there any trick to get it to stop ticking if it is to loud? I understand it makes a tick but the noise has increased quite a bit... pga Edited by pgaschulz 3/3/2005 5:54 PM

| They tick, The unit measures depth by making a tick and when the noise rebounds off the bottom, a fish, a branch, weeds etc. it then anylizes the sound returned and interprets that noise on your screen visually*. * basic description of a complicated process | |||

Posts: 656 Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | Both replies are correct. A transducer changes one form of energy into another form. In this case a electrical impluse to a mechanical impluse listens for a replay (echo) then converts mechanical back to electrical and displays it on a read out. Sonar is SOund NAvigation and Ranging. The reason that someone will hear the "clicking" sometimes and not others has to due with the sensitivity setting that the unit is at. The higher the sensitivity the more power and the louder the click you hear. Of course this is easier done with the boat on the trailer then when in the water. In fact this chacteristic serves as a basic trouble shooting techinque. If you are having trouble with your unit this will allow you to see if the transducer is working properly or if the trouble is in the head unit. With the boat on the trailer turn the unit on and turn up its' sensitivity to full. Go to were the transducer is mounted and check to hear if it's clicking. If it is, then the transducer is functioning and the problem is in the head unit. If it's not the problem is the transducer and it probably needs replacing. I also do a quick check every so often when the boat has been sitting unused for awhile is to be sure that there isn't a problem from a mouse chewing on the transducer cable. A quick second check would be,again with the boat on the trailer and the units sensitivity turned up, run your hand back and forth along the bottom of the transducer and look at the units screen. If you can see random markings (noise) on the screen then both the unit and transducer should be working properly. Hope all this helps. Edited by fishpoop 3/10/2005 12:34 AM
