What are the best reels for using the large HR's and Wabulls.

I don't think there is any "magic" reel. Some may be better than others, but as far as reels go, I like to use a faster retrieve reel so I can pick up the slack line quickly.

Garcia's in 6500, 6600 and 7000 are good, as are Calcutta's, Okuma's, Tica's, ect....

A reel is a reel, I have yet to find one that is superior over another.

I agree with Mike, none of them are bullet proof. Therefore I look for the best customer service and none will beat Abu Garcia.

For the baits you asked about I use a higher speed reel to pick up slack in a hurry. An abu 6601 (I fish lefty) is my reel of choice for those baits. It has a 6.3:1 ratio and has the thumbar release which I prefer.

Norm,

I use an Abu 5600 - Ultra Cast (heavier spool bearings in the UC's) Gator Grip handle. I have this on a 8' Extra Heavy All-Star rod. Great for big jakes, shallow invaders, wabull's, dawg's, Hughies, Cobb's, Phantoms, etc.

I have debated puting a set of C4 (6.3:1) gears in it for the reasons you and Mike mentioned. I like how they pick the line up a little quicker but a person has to remember to slow down when reeling/fighting a fish. Longer Gator Grip handles coupled with C4 gears and you're picking up a lotta line with every turn of the handle.

Sure wish Garcia would start making the UC and C5 models again..
