Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I'm headed to Bailey's Harbor on the Lake Michigan side of Door Co., Wi. this weekend, July 10-13. I would like to do some fishing in the area. I've never been to the area before so I'm naturally considering the big lakeseeing as we're staying right accross the street. Any tips or clues would be greatly appreciated. I won't have a powered boat but do have access to a good cayak and portable hummingbird and am figuring my best option is smallmouth along or just off the shore. If anyone could offer any fishing info or even a good bait/tackle shop in the area I could start there. Has anyone caught muskies on this part of lake Michigan or nearby lakes? Just want to know how to prepare if in fact there are muskie near by. Not a whole lot of time to fish but will certainly get on the water to do at least a little fishing. Obviously I'll be traveling light. Thanks, Karl Scherer

Posts: 2112 Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | There is some serious kick-butt smallie action all around the penninsula. If you ever get up that way again, I do have a boat, and my wife and I have been looking for an excuse to do some musky fishing up near that way, so e-mail us!

Posts: 432 Location: mpls | Karl, I just came back from a week on the bay side. There are Muskies on the lake side(SHHHHH!), Look around the Mink River, both in the river and in the esturary. It is shallow getting into the river, but once you are in the depth is deep enough for a bigger boat. If you decide to go for Smallies also ,the river rocks! My best day there, fishing by myself was 146 fish in a day of fishing. I could have caught more, but I got tired . Go figure. If you want to fish Muskies on the Bay side,go to Cabots point and the flats(gotta troll). Also little Sturgeon Bay. Good luck. Joe

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Thanks for the info. I'll keep it handy for next time. I did get out for some killer smallie action. The first action I had though was without a rod/reel. Went snorkeling off the shores of the peninsula state park and did battle with a 22-24"er as I retrieved someone's garbage (Empty beer can) from the bottom. As I pulled the can from the depth I was ambushed by a monster smallie who rammed the hand holding the beer can 3X's. WOW, tenacious little critters. I pulled the tab from the top of the can and waved it near the bass and she kept thumping my hand for as long as I cared to wave it around. Didnt want to mess with it too long as I know this bass came off a spawning bed. Saw a couple of hammer handles as well. Caught a few back in Bailey's Harbor casting #3 mepp's. As I said, this wasnt meant to be a fishing trip but I'll surely arrange one to the Door Co. area in the future. The Salmon/trout guts were knocking the snot out of the fish as well lots of full coolers coming off the lake.
