| I don't really need a new reel but after spending a day fishing on Eagle Lake with a TranX 401 I borrowed from the lodge and having a gift certificate to the Musky Shop was thinking about picking one up. However, I saw that a number of folks in a post were having issues with their reels. Have those concerns been addressed or is this just not a good idea?
I spent the day casting in winds that ranged from 20 to 30+mph and didn't even have one backlash with a reel that I had never used. Seemed very smooth. |

| I have a few, including one that's never handled anything lighter than a pounder, and they've held up fine. The only issue I've had is that after a few long casts, line tends to bunch up on one side. Revos do the same thing for me.
You can avoid the issue by making sure your line is perpendicular to your spool at the start of your retrieve, but that's not always feasible. I normally use the 400 for big rubber and gliders, where there's normally a bit of a countdown after the cast, so it's not an issue for me. |

Location: Downers Grove, IL |
Great reels in my experience and I have several. One issue that they seemed to have corrected is the drags loosening over time, ie, a day of casting. You'd have to regularly check that it was tight, lest you set the hook on a fish and the drag slips. But I think they've corrected that, as I haven't noticed it on the 2-3 newest ones I've purchased. (I had the drag washers replaced on the ones with issues).

I'd also recommend that you buy the version with the power handle (vs. a paddle). Musky Shop sells both the power and the high speed Trans reels with the power handle included.
|

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I have two 400s, on 300, 200 and two 150s. I clearly like them. Only issue is you should check your drag at the beginning of everyday. As you should anyways.
Otherwise, rock solid for me. |
