Anybody tried this?

How long can you keep sucker minnows alive without feeding them? I recently had a few for about a month, but I got rid of them because I could not keep the water clean enough once i started to feed them.

They can really mess up a tank fast if you feed them.

I cant get big suckers anywhere near me so I would like to be able to keep a few in the fall. Maybe for up to a month or two. If you have good water and oxygen, can they last this long without food?

Thanks -
Luke

Hi Luke. Ya you can keep 'em going for a while without food. The key is oxygen, clean water and keep them cold. I kept a batch running for a month this past fall and then gave 'em away because I was done for the year. I bought them mid Oct and lasted until mid Nov. Mid Oct in Eau Claire was on the warmer side this year so I iced them every day.

I had some mortality but not much. The biggest hit I took was when the little freaks got the lid off the tank. Only had two die from "natural causes" in the tanks.

They are a lot of work. I live in the city so I haul lake water and clean the tanks every other day.

Baldy,

Good question, I have kept them in a 55 gallon garbage barrel with a good air pump (fish tank) and a couple of long air stones. I put a peice of plywood on top with a couple of bricks to keep out intruders.
I know the guy at the bait shop and he gave me some of that blue stuff that they put in the tanks for slime. They stayed alive for a long time, over a month and I never fed them, often thought about feeding them though.
What did you feed them?
I think someone who works at a bait store would have the answer to this question.

Thanks for the input guys. It will help out alot.

Ralph, I just fed them sinking goldfish pellets. They must have liked them because they were crapping like mad shortly after I started to feed them.
