Agree with Beaver. Some of our absolute best days on the water have been in early fall, during the first really nasty cold front...as the weather is moving in. Rain, snow, sleet and wind...the nastier the better.

No "rocket science" required for this one, of course, but in a multi-lake area this time of year, you can likely find a lake that has completed the process of turnover, one that's right in the middle of it, one where it has yet to begin and all points in-between. It's a good time to have friends on the water who will share the needed intel so that you can maximize your time.

This is still my first year doing this.. Whenever I go to Tonka I usually fish two sand spots and then spend the rest of my time on deep weeds and usually see some fish out in the weeds. What is generally the water temp when they go shallow and start to feed around those channels? Thanks

I also like cooling temps in the fall. But this may be a little too much of a good thing. From the NOAA for the NW Angle of the LOTWs.

Thursday Snow. High near 37. Windy, with a north northwest wind 29 to 32 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 10 to 16 inches possible.

  • Thursday Night Snow likely with widespread blowing snow. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Windy, with a north northwest wind 26 to 33 mph, with gusts as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.
  • Friday A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Breezy, with a north northwest wind 18 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.
  • Friday Night A 20 percent chance of snow before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. North northwest wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

You forgot to mention wind chill values in the mid to upper teens and zero visibility. I'm not ashamed to say I've never fished through a winter storm warning.

If the fishing is a quarter as good as last weekend, I'll take it.
