I'd have to disagree. Pelican is as good as ever and the fish are there. Now with that size limit in place and thanks to guys like Norm, Mike and Steve for getting that done, it's only bound to get better in time, in my opinion.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I'd say Pelican is doing very well, when considering quality/quantity. No, there isn't the numbers there was at the peak, but the average quality is much better than when the stocking was very heavy and contacting numerous fish in an evening is pretty common. I've fished Pelican as a Guide since 1974, and she's WAY better now than then and the quality is getting better each year. If the limit hadn't been implemented though, she'd have suffered quickly with the harvest numbers that were common there. Don't thank me, thank Mike Roberts and Norm Wild, they did all the work.

Location: Brookfield, WI | Steve, now that the 50" limit is in place, could Pelican become not only a lake with good trophy potential, but also a numbers lake? Or are there environmental/habitat issues that would hinder that?
I really enjoyed the one day I spent fishing on Pelican. Norm telling a story or two about every spot we fished really gave me a feel for what a special place it is to some people.

| I was real curious to fish Pelican this year and even had bought a map. Best laid plans. I am also really interested in what the findings are for reproduction by the DNR in a lot of these lakes they stopped stocking? I have fished several over the last two years and there are good numbers of 30-35 inch fish but don't really know if that is holdover from prior stockings or supported by repro.

I believe the goal on Pelican is a lower density self sustaining population resulting in much higher quality, a general equation for big girls. I truly think it's well on the way to just that since the 50" limit was applied.
I caught a few little muskies there this year from a couple year classes, great to see. |
