I'm a teacher and manage pretty well with the musky obsession. Heck, I still having money left over to feed the kids! It does help having a understanding wife with a good job to help pay all the bills and likes to fish too.
Before marriage and kids, I was on the lakes with my 14' fishing boat all the time. I had no problems making ends meet. Once the kids came around time got tight but now that they are old enough to be in a boat for several hours I'm out more again. Actually, last year my wife convienced me to buy a better boat. Her only stipulation was that it had to have a big enough motor to pull a skier or the kids on a tube once in awhile. The old 200hp gets me to the fishing hole pretty darn quick!
So anyway, Yes you can easily do it on a teachers wages. |

| It isn't cheap. Boat, gas, food, rods, reels, line, and lures. This isn't one of the more cheaper hobbies out there. |

I caught my 1st legal in a 12ft row boat, with casting decks added front and rear.
2 converted office chairs with plastic bag covers
A converted utility trailer.
One used trailer hitch
A 6hp evinrude that my neighbor gave me.
2 PVC rod holders
A couple of Salmon rods w/Pen 209's
So the whole deal was probably about $50.00 to start. Now I have $40,000.00 in a truck, only about $6,000.00 in the boat, $1,000.00 trolling motor, $3,000.00 in equipment.
I kind of liked it better the old way........

| Increasing gas prices will definitely put a damper on my fishing for sure.
Of course, these increases WILL affect consumer products as well as we've already seen with food. I'm sure that it won't be long before fishing equipment prices increase, regardless of how small. It costs $$ to ship them and it takes fuel to perform the task.
If one's goal is to try to get out every now and then and chuck a few pike / musky baits on heavier bass gear or a low-end pike / musky rig, then not much.
If one's goal is to be the best one possibly can and maybe even entertain the idea of tournament fisherman-level or guide-level skill, then it will probably be quite a bit more. |
