| Back in 2009, I had the pleasure of netting a 58.5" musky caught by my late fishing partner Bruce Wisner A thunderstorm was moving in and the fish was cruising the surface when we first saw it. It paid no attention to the first cast Bruce made, but it crushed his globe on the second cast. this was on the 'O'. I have since seen two other fish in that class.

Evidently they shed them come winter..

| Steve’s example of just landing a 56” and then seeing one considerably larger is interesting, I’d be interested to hear how many Dick P has seen in NW Ontario that might have been 58”? … as Matt pointed out many have zero experience with 53” fish let alone 55”+ fish…I’m sure many saw this a few years ago but google Darcy Cox 55 3/8, (I’d post a pic but not my fish) ..I promise you 90% of muskie anglers see that follow there bait and they think they saw a 60” fish! Heck I’ve been fooled with big fish in the net! Both ways, longer and shorter- they aren’t all built the same …I’ve been a part of 7 fish between 53-57” in my boat - some really fat, one abnormally skinny… when they get over 53” they become increasingly difficult to judge them in the water, and being off 2-3” is common… for me I generally underestimate, I’m thinking of 2 that we moved and then came back and caught… bottom line is a 58”+ is a unicorn on 99% of the waters they inhabit- they aren’t out there acting different than the dozen’s of 54-56” Ontario and MN fish that get caught every year, it’s not that we aren’t using big enough baits… Mike Lazarus has caught plenty over 57” on 8” depth raiders, no he and Thorpe and others out east catch 58” fish because, hmm they are actually there to catch …the problem becomes how many true 58” plus live on say Lotw or eagle? Personally I think you could count them on one hand, on either lake …needle in a haystack!
