Paying someone to give you valuable knowledge is a pretty honest way to operate. Better than mooching!  Too many people (not saying the original poster is!) are worried about being viewed as “legitimate” anglers. For guides, reputation is crucial, but for everyday anglers, who cares? My advice: learn however you can, give credit where it’s due, have fun fishing, and try to derive some personal joy from your success (to heck with what other people think).
