Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | As you guys can see it has that Jake or Grandma profile but does not copy either one. Many major differences. The biggest is that its made out of Cedar(Western Red) 4 degree difference in Lip angle, its 5/8th thick while the other two are 1/2. The lure is 9.5 inches long. The lip has tapered sides to remove stability making it wake up at slower speeds. The Lip is Longer then either of the others.. I did this to make it start working at 2mph. The downside is it will not run real good over 5 mph. The roll and wobble is very good at 3 to 4 mph. The big fish that was just caught on this lure ate it at 3.5 mph. They dive about 12 foot max. I really just built a few of these for the gang over on the Larry and up on Lac Suel but it seems that the Green bay guys are looking for slower running baits as well. Anyway maybe some of you guys can use these tips on how I took an old design and remade it to do something else. Kingfisher

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | Well I dont know about better just very different. I was asked to to make one better at slow speeds so that is what I did. But yes it fun taking an old design and redoing it different. I wonder if anyone ever tried making a jointed one in that profile Hmmmm Kingfisher Edited by Kingfisher 9/28/2009 10:58 PM

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | Nice fish Kurt, I might have to build a casting version ha ha ha . Ill have to go out tomorrow and toss one for while. The reason I built it at all was because the guys on the St Lawrence wanted a Jake profile that would troll down to 2 mph but act more wild at slow speeds. The only way to do that in my opinion was to destabilize the lure. It hunts for stability at much slower speeds making it swing and flash more. It is possible that If I build one from hardwood it might do some tricks when ripping it. We will see. Again nice fish Thats bigger then anything I got this year. Mike, you have been holding out on me as well! If it does what you say it does trolling it will be a good caster as well. The only thing I would suggest for a casting version is not making it too bouyant. Slow rise (not neautral though). Look at maybe making the lip without the chamfer on the backside just like the grandma shown. The old Jakes that had lips like that were killers. Travis Kopke

Posts: 4266 | Great minds think alike. I've been using a Grandma profile and using 1 1/8" thick Maple and routering a 1/2" roundover all the way around and making it into gliders. I used some hard maple and weighted it for a slow drop, and the first tests were very nice. I think lakes with Smelt in it should produce well......or any other forage base that has the profile like a Smelt, or maybe trout, or (suggestions). In the last week I came up with 5 different shapes for gliders, but now I have to get them ready in a hurry so I can use them before the end of October, and have to finish up the Gifts that people are waiting for. I always leave myself short for fall fishing somehow. Maybe I should quit fishing in the summer and just try to come up with lure ideas instead. Time to spend all week in the garage and in the basement, if I want to do some fishing before the snow starts to fly.

Posts: 474 | Very nice work. I would be real interested in how it casts now. I like the real bouyant baits. Any idea what depth that gets casting. Love the twist you put on a classis bait. Kevinj

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | The Magnum Claw will make an excellent casting bait where a more buoyant lure is desired. This bait will see a lot of time in my boat in areas where I throw 10" unweighed suicks in the summer. Short pulls drive it down about 2' and long pulls will get it down 4-5'. I was able to get it into some weeds and it backed very well. This bait reminds me a little of the old Grandma that was more buoyant. Good job Mike, this one will be a hit!

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Kingfisher - 10/21/2009 1:20 PM Thanks Will!!! Well I am pretty happy with that report. Now Ill build a hardwood version that is neutral bouyant and lets see what that one does. Mike I've now installed a screw in weight system to see what it will take to get to neutral. Maybe it would be easier to offer it stock with the screw in weight insert, especially if it still trolls really slow with the extra weight. Report #2 coming this weekend.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Well... the installed weight system slowed it down but not enough to where I want it for cold water. Hardwood is probably the answer with the weight balance like we talked should give it a good slash.
