Posts: 55 | All: We will be doing many shore lunches on our trip this year due to lengthy travels from Camp. We put together a shore lunch kit last year, but I was hoping some of you had input, lists, ideas etc.... that would help us improve what we came up with in the past. Any input would great.... | ||

Stove(s), propane, matches/lighter, frying pans, sauce pan for beans, hot pads, canola oil, metal spatula, salt/pepper, paper plates, wicker paper plate holders, silverware, garbage bag, ziploc bag for breading fish, can opener, potatoes o'brien, beans, beer, appetite. | ||

Smokey's on the Bay will now have gourmet boil in the bag entrees call Sportsman's Choice Entrees . If you have water you can eat like a king. Rignt now we have pork shanks, duckling and colby beef short ribs. It's shelf life is 30 days in a cooler, perfect for fishing, hunting or camping trips. This food is awesome!!! Posts: 3 | Check out the coleman all-in-one cooking system, it'll will pretty much take care of anything fish, brats, steak. It's small and comes in a case that fits out of site in a compartment. That some propane, meat, and a zip lock with utensils, napkins, and plates and your set. Use this setup every weekend works great! | ||

I cook shore lunches all the time at the Angle and back at my cabin or at my neighbor Doug's cabin. Try making fish tacos. Bread fish with a combination of flour and corn meal, about 50-50. Make sure to add spices to the mix. I usually add Johnnies Season Salt, pepper and paprika. You can also purchase a commercial mix. Season fish with Johnnies when you take the fillets out. My buddy makes fresh salsa at the site. Quicker shore lunch than the traditional fried potatoes and onions. Bring sour cream. If you get a big one (+24") clean it remove the lateral line. Make walleye chowder. I just buy the packaged wild rice soup mix or cream of potato. I usually add a corn of corn and mushrooms. Make soup according to directions add walleye with about 3 minutes left. Fry with canola oil or lard. I carry an 11lb. Propane tank and tripod. Consider getting a Leech Lake knife. Awesome, but you do have to ship it to get. Put your fish on ice in a cooler. Easier to fillet | |||

Posts: 3 | cast iron pan, 1 pd of bacon, 1 onion, loaf of bread, oil, and what ever fish breading you like. fry up the bacon, slice the onion and make bacon, onion sandwichs for hors d'oeuvres. add a little oil to your bacon grease and pan fry your fillets. makes a great lunch. | ||

Posts: 4266 | I'm with Pointer, I only use peanut oil when I cook fish. I use Fryin' Magic. I dump a box full into a gallon freezer bag with a palm full of onion powder and a palm full of garlic powder. I have enough Mountain House dehydrated food to last about 3 months. I will take a 10# can of "Breakfast Skillet". It's potatoes, onions, peppers and ham. Boil water and mix as directed, but then I brown it in a skillet. I have several denatured alcohol stoves, but they don't burn long enough, so I use a couple of those to get the oil hot enough and then switch to a 4-hour Sterno to keep it hot. I like making fires, but you can't always count on the weather or wood. Gotta have 2 cast iron skillets, one deep and one shallow. Deep to fry fish, shallow to brown spuds. You can fit everything that you need in a soft-sided cooler, or split fixings with another boat if there's four people. I have a hard plastic filet board that works as a serving tray after the fish are cleaned. It doesn't have to be fancy, that's what shore lunch is about. On The Mississippi River, Taylor and I plus 2 friends would pick a sand bar and meet there. We chose to do our eating in the boats because of the silt and sand that makes its way into everything. But then you can spread out a tarp and nap in the sun while lunch settles. I think that the nap is one of the most over-looked aspects of shore lunch. The older I get, the better I get at napping. | ||

Posts: 566 Location: Elgin, IL | Sounds like alot of work. Nothing beats some fire-grilled smoked Polish sossage on some french bread...diced onions, grated cheese, a few jalapeno slices. A few High Life's to wash it down. So easy. I just keep some dry kindling on board, plenty of nice shoreline campsites around to choose from. If you fish with me, you will also want to stay upwind of Tim. | ||

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | If you don't want fish for shore lunch every time, go get one or two campfire pudgies and have at it with whatever you choose. Grilled cheese, pizza sauce and cheese with pepperoni. My mom always had peanut butter and cherry pie filling. Those were good, although I didn't like the cherries. If you are doing fish, what you can also do is boil your potatoes a bit before you go out, then wrap them in tinfoil. When you get your fire going, put the potatoes in the coals to warm them up while you fry the fish up. Or...if you are bringing a small grate along, dice up the potatoes and add carrots and onions and place in tinfoil. Add your preferred seasonings, and a good dab of butter and close up the foil. Put on your fire about 10 minutes before you need to fry the fish and continue to let the potatoes and carrots go while you fry. All done at one time, and oh....soo good!! Steve | ||
