I'm thinking about purchasing a new VHF Radio to replace my old APELCO CLIPPER JR. handheld radio. After many good years of service, she finally crapped out. I like the idea of a fixed-mount radio with the extra power that would be peace of mind on a few larger water fishing trips such as Bay de Noc, Grn Bay, Mille Lacs, and Saginaw Bay. Any body have any ideas on features or brands that I should look for ? I know how far I can take my 18 ft boat but to have the weather and instant communication in an emergency, the cost of a radio is cheap insurance. So what do you guys think, handheld or fixed mount ?

I'd say you definitely want a fixed mount with a quality antenna. Can't beat the Shakespeare Galaxy 8' fiberglass on a ratchet mount. Several good radios out there. Lots of folks here help out, here's some ideas:

Along the same lines, looking back through some of the old posts, do the shorter fiberglass antennas get better range than the stainless whip? It seems that when on Pewaukee (to give those of you that know it) if I'm on the far west end, I can barely hear someone that is by the narrows. How can I get this fixed? New antenna, or something else?
