| Last year was our first time fishing the Spring opener but on lake nippising. Having not done it yet we asked some of the same questions. The most common suggestion we got was to locate newly growing weeds/green weeds. Locating this near in coming steams is a good thing too, as this is where muskies spawn. By the time our season opens they will have started moving out to summer zones, I stress started because you can still catch them in their spawning zones. As for temperature range I have read and have heard a lot of guys label 67 degrees as the magic number or zone you want to have at this time of year.
The tricky thing to all of this is that the spring we had last year kind of made all of this either tough to find or not at all. If the fish spawn later do to an colder spring it could affect the quality of fishing. The positive to this year is that it is a week later than last so hopefully even with a colder spring we will see warmer temps by then to heat up the water and get weeds growing.
As for lure size, I think you can catch them on anything still. Some guys go smaller, some stay the same and some throw anything and everything. Best scenario is you have a couple or few guys in the boat throwing different things and you go from there.
Good Luck this year!
