Location: Not far enough north! | Hey guys I have a few questions,
My future boat is in production and the excitement is starting to get to me. Going from a esox mag to a 1760 GT. I am putting a 75 Optimax on it. I had a 4 stroke for the last ten years. My past experience with 2 strokes is all on smaller pre-mix engines. I am trying to get ready for the boat so that when it arrives I can start fishing right away. Not having any experience with the new DI engines I'm kinda looking for some advice on what to expect.
What kind of spare parts should I get to carry with me? ( Fuses, fuel filters, Plugs, ect...)
How much oil will I need to have with me for a normal "vacation" week of fishing?

| I went from a 4 stroke suzuki 70 hp which I loved, to the 75 optimax.
The optimax is faster for sure
It is a tiny bit louder but still pretty quiet.
Runs great and uses comparable gas (oil is pricey - but this is an affordable engine to run.
It is a LARGE motor for a 75 but actually weighs the same as my 4 stroke did.
The 4 stroke suzuki was VERY reliable. Only had the merc for a year - so we will see.

Location: Green Bay, WI | If you go over the The Hull Truth forum ( http://www.thehulltruth.com/ ) and use their search engine there, you can find hours and hours worth of reading material on the newer Direct Injection (DI) two-stroke engines. There are many guys there running them on all sorts of boats, in sizes up to 300hp. There are many guys running both the OptiMax and the E-TEC units. If you pay attention to the posts from the guys who own and run them, I think you'll get a good idea of just what to expect. For instance, there are different settings for running an oil mixture ratio, dependent upon the quality oil you run. While the higher quality oil costs more, you use less of it--so it apparently results in a lower cost, according to many of these guys. I used to think that a four-stroke engine was the *only* was to go on a new boat, but now I'm not so sure. For every horror story you hear about the DI two-stroke engines, there seem to several owners with very good experiences to report.
Take a look at that forum if you really want to get a good idea of what to expect. There are guys running these engines with over 1000 hours on them, and reading some of those threads should go a long way towards answering any questions you might have about these engines.
