Is there some trick to setting the hook using hard body surface baits? I think I'm using a 6" jointed hog wobbeler(?), for some reason that name sticks in my head for this lure. But I've had 3 nice St Louis River Muskies blast this bait and I have'nt been able to get a hook up. Is there some trick or do I just need more numbers of hits and sooner or later one will hook up?

Is there a trick to getting a good hookset? well yes and no. You are going to miss hook sets, with any lure; but sinking the hooks into a muskie while using a surface bait (pretty much any one of them) can be a bit more complicated. You need wait until you feel the "pull" of the fish on the end of your line instead of setting the hook when you see that the fish has the lure. Unfortunately, this can only be learned from experience (IMO).

I feel your frustration and all I can tell you is that many times the fish will not really be actually hitting the bait with flared gills and an open mouth. A lot of time I have seen the fish simply slap away at the bait with their tail, they "nose" the bait and flick at it like a dolphin. It is really wierd. You have to wait to feel the weight! Many times the fish will hook themselves. I have experienced the fish blowing up on the bait many times, and it is frustrating when you don't hook any face! But keep on using topwater because it can be the greatest bait! And very fun to fish. Heart-stopping action! Have fun! And be relentless in your pursuit!!!! []
