So does the hassel with cleaning the equipment far offset the durability of the paint over using water based products? Seems to me that the plastic baits that are factory painted are done with enamel's not water based. But I may be wrong?

6 of one 1/2 dozen of another. usually personal preference in what paint you use.
The water based they have now are excellent and easy to work with.
although nothing stands up to a muskies teeth!!! Like driving your car against a brick wall somethings gonna get scratched!!

The differences in properties between the two types of paints are to be considered when choosing.

I use both and love using both. Gives the best of both worlds, depending on the type of bait being built.
