Location: S.E. Wisconsin | Just picked up a couple of new reels and noticed a severe amount of reel grease in the worm gear, do any of you clean these areas up upon getting a new reel? Would regular oil be better and a good cleaning after every use be better than globs of grease? Any other tips for keeping this reel working like it does now? Thanks |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | When I get a new reel I will use it 1-2 days and then clean all the factory grease out and soak and clean the bearings. I use HOT SAUCE GREASE AND OIL, U do not need that much grease on the gears, after the bearings are clean 2 drops of oil. I will also remove the drag washers and clean them and coat them with CAL'S DRAG GREASE. GOOD LUCK |

| Demon, I usually tear down a new reel and wipe all the grease off everything but the main drive gear. Then I will put a drop of oil on all the other moving parts, including the worm gear. If you run your finger along the worm gear and all you get is a black finger, its time to oil it again. I keep a couple Q tips in my tackle box to clean it off if it gets really gooped up, otherwise I just keep it oiled. Then at the end of the season I do a complete teardown, cleaning, and re oil the whole thing. They work better when they are oiled -- a lot of what comes from the factory with grease all over it will actually work better if you get rid of the grease and use oil instead.
p.s. a little oil goes a LONG way. |
