| Springtime - try fancasting flats quickly with faster moving baits looking for active fish. Spinnerbaits, rattletraps, bucktails, small twitch baits and quick hopping gliders are good. If it is a large flat, try analyzing it for subleties - feeder creek, weed pods, rocks, wood, sand, sharp break, river channel, anything that stands out and concentrate on those areas.
Summertime - I usually only fish flats when it is windy. Active fish have a tendency to cruise the flats during windy conditions. I have the best luck with quick moving erratic baits when casting under these connditions. Make a drift along the deep edge and then make a drift across the middle. If you don't see any fish, move on. If you can troll, speed trolling spinnerbaits across flats during windy conditions can be dynamite. |
