Actually they gain an extra set of bicuspids...these are shed as the water temperature drops, much like the antlers of the whitetail deer since fewer teeth are needed during the winter months. Vetenarian dental students struggle w/ this question during their final exams as the phenomenon is rarely discussed in public + is forbidden w/in the confines of pet store/shop property....a favorite pastime for youngsters used to be to look for these shed teeth during low water periods + sell them to jewelry shops on the local market place during economically depressed times...that practice slowly disappeared w/ the advent of the surf/skateboard + is now practically extinct. My boss is unique in the fact that he can grow a set of teeth overnight...I have been removing them from my backside for yrs now on a dasily basis....hope this helps! [:sun:]
