| Has this ever happened to you??? Two summers ago I was ripping a small suick through pockets in heavy cabbage and there was a nice pocket that I had fancasted and worked several times to no avail. Moving the boat along I hooked a small musky probably around 28 inches and was reeling it back in and brought it through this pocket that I had already worked when all hell broke loose. A flash of fury smacked the fish harder than I have ever witnessed and white water splashed everywhere for a couple of seconds. I was hanging on, totally caught off guard for a second while the two muskies were going nuts not 15 feet away. Then the line started streaking for deep water, I reeled down so I could get a good hookset and gave it a good one. After a few runs I was soon netting a 41 inch fish with my black lab, Lucy, as the only witness. This more dominate fish took the bait right out of the smaller fishes mouth!!!! It wasn't a huge fish but a decent one for this northern WI lake. My question is that there is no doubt in my mind that this fish had seen the suick presented when I worked the weed pocket prior to the little fish but it did not want it until it saw the smaller fish with the bait. This was no doubt an example of a larger fish establishing feeding dominance over a subordinate. My question is has anybody else had an experience like this and is there any way to try and duplicate this "dominate/competition strike"??? |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | I was working a crankbait early this year and caught a 40" Musky on it.. while fighting this fish another fish tried to swipe at the bait... Quite amazing to say the least... As far as duplicating that.... no idea.. I think it was a fluke for me as the fish seemed to have the feed bags on that day... |

| On Vermillion the first week of August I had an upper 40 follow in hot going after my pacemaker, and then my girlfriend crossed my line reeling in her spinnerbait (She was learning to cast). As my lure dangled there, sure enough another upper 40 comes up to take a peak. We stand there helpless, watching these two giant fish watch us. I could have netted them both they were so close.
We then untangled the mess and cast back out but couldn't get them back up. I know that is a big fish garage now that I will revisit it ever time on that body of water! |
