Location: Stellendam, The Netherlands | I want to buy a new reel for my new jerkbait rod. On my heavier rods I use 6501's. They perform well, I only have to put a new spring in it every now and then. Do the 5000B and 5500 have the same problems? Can anyone tell me the difference between these two reels? I will use the new reel on a 6" light jerkbait rod. I will use it to throw small jerkbaits and twitch baits. Or do you have any other suggestions for me? It must be a left-hand reel.

Location: Southern W.Va. | If I'm not mistaken, the 5000 reel from Abu has bushings while the 5500 has bearings instead. To get a reel that would be a true left-handed reel , get a 5501 or a 5001. Personally ,I would get another 6501 as I think it is a tougher reel . Only a few dollors more and larger line cap. than a 5500. I have both and only use the 5500 for real small stuff in the spring (3/4oz. to 1oz. stuff.) and fish it mainly on a heavy bass flipping stick. I consider it a light duty musky reel and use my 3- 6500s at all other duties (jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, twitchbaits ,topwater and cranbaits. Stick with the larger reel for jerking big baits.

Location: Stellendam, The Netherlands | I won't buy a 6501 because it's too big for the rod I will use. It's a very light jerkbait rod for throwing small 1-2 oz jerkbaits for pike. On a lighter rod, even the smaller pike will give you some sport. A 6501 wouldn't fit the rod. I was just wondering if the 5001 would have the same problems with the freespool like all the 6501 and 5501's have. I am fed up with that. |
