Posts: 159 Location: Carney, Mi (in da UP eh!) | There is group in Michigan that promotes Under Water Spearfishing and they have a proposal being presented to the Michigan DNR to allow them to Underwater Spearfish Lake Sturgeon and Muskies... one suggestion they are proposing is to allow the Dnr to offer an annual tag system to be purchased for them to underwater spearfish a Muskie and also Lake Sturgeon... comments can be made at the upcoming "Coffee and Conversations' meetings which will be only held online

Nathan Referencing the FO 219.25 proposal document, you will find the following changes as listed below: 1.) The addition of the remaining portions of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, the addition of Lake Superior, Lake Erie, Lake St. Claire, St. Claire river, Detroit river and the St. Mary’s river(Great lakes connecting waters). Exception for the area known as “standard rock” lighthouse and surrounding area to prohibit underwater spearfishing within a 2 mile radius. 2.) The addition of all remaining species as listed in the Michigan fishing guide under “Table 1: general fishing regulations” to mean: largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, yellow perch and sunfishes. All remaining salmonoid species listed in “FO 253.25 - Great Lakes and Great Lakes connecting waters - salmon and trout regulations” to mean: chinook salmon, coho salmon, atlantic salmon, pink salmon, brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout(steelhead). An exception to prohibit underwater spearfishing for Lake Sturgeon and Muskellunge. Requesting the DNR offer a single tag to resident and non-resident underwater spearfishing anglers for Lake Sturgeon and Muskellunge on a draw/point based system to recruit additional funding/revenue and to create a unique species opportunity for underwater spearfishing anglers. 3.) Permit underwater spearfishing after sunset and prior to sunrise(at night). The expectation is to further create opportunity and minimize likelihood of user conflict in areas where the day time may be limited by crowding of particular angling groups(boating anglers/pier anglers). Underwater spearfishing anglers must adhere to marking requirements detailed by Michigan marine safety laws as well as any applicable DNR regulations. This requires anyone diving at night(permitted by MMSL) to have their diver down flag illuminated and visible from at least 200ft. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this proposal with the different citizen advisory committees and stakeholder groups the DNR utilizes when considering proposals for recommendations of fisheries orders. Please advise on any changes or modifications to this proposal as needed. Thank you for your time and consideration. Edited by UPMuskyr 3/9/2024 1:03 PM
