| Howdy,
As stated, I'm curious if anyone has used the Tranx 500, PG or HG, on every rod they have or for every lure they cast. Obviously the size and weight is an issue, however, it also offers line pick up rates and power that no other reels have.
I remember back in the late 1980's and early 90's watching guys like Pearson and Johnson using 7000s on In-Fisherman for jerks and cranks which, based upon weight and ergonomics, were close to the Tranx. Also, I saw an article that Gord Pyzer recently wrote about using the HG for pike due to the incredible pick up rate in weeds, etc.
From a "landing the fish" perspective a fast reel has a lot of advantages in preventing slack from forming, driving fish down from jumping, etc. Additionally, there are some bass pros, Aaron Martin for example, who use the 8.5:1 ratios for everything, for all the reasons mentioned as well as for reeling baits quickly through dead water or to cast to surfacing or splashing fish.
Obviously you can do the same thing with high speed Toro Beasts or Rockets or with Daiwa Lexas as well, albeit with smaller spool diameters and slower line pickup on long casts. The same could presumably be said about the 400 sized Tranx which should have similar performance to the Beast and Lexa, at least as far as spool size and line pick up is concerned.
Curious to hear your thoughts and experiences.
Take care,
